What moves us
Piso Digno is born out of concern for a social problem that affects thousands of Uruguayans. More than 656 squatter settlements exist in Uruguay which house more than 20.000 people and according to a report from the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) over 7.000 people live on dirt floors.
Dirt floors are breeding grounds for bacteria and parasites which cause malnutrition and gastrointestinal disease.
The moisture which evaporates from dirt floors is responsible for different respiratory illnesses of which Uruguay ranks high on global contagion rates and are the cause of a large part of school absenteeism.
Poor flooring conditions discourage parents during their children’s first stages as those involve the act of crawling: a key aspect to motor and brain development.
